The federal government announced it will spend more than $11.7 million to improve the efficiency and longevity of more than 490 homes in the Halifax Regional Municipality, said the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

The funding, provided by the Canada Greener Affordable Housing Program (CGAH) and the Affordable Housing Fund (AHF), will pay for “pre-retrofit activities and key energy-efficiency renovations needed for multi-unit residential buildings across the municipality,” said a Thursday news release.

Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Nathaniel Erskine-Smith said the funding represents the government’s work with partners to end the housing crisis.

“Everyone deserves a place to call their own, and the Affordable Housing Fund is one way we’re helping make that a reality for Canadians,” Erskine-Smith said. “We will keep investing in housing projects like the ones announced today in Halifax.”

The AHF is a $14.6 billion program under the National Housing Strategy (NHS) that prioritizes “projects that help people who need it most, including women and children fleeing family violence, seniors, Indigenous Peoples, people living with disabilities, those with mental health or addiction issues, Veterans, and young adults.”

The CGAH is a $1.2 billion plan to make multi-unit rentals and low-to-moderate-income households more efficient and environmentally-friendly.

The NHS is a more than $115 billion plan to give more Canadians homes. Progress is updated quarterly on the Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada (HICC) website. The Housing and Infrastructure Project Map shows affordable housing projects that have been developed.

As of December 2024, the federal government has committed $60.09 billion to support the creation of more than 156,000 units and the repair of more than 298,000 units under the NHS.
