Halifax Regional Municipality tables preliminary budget of $1.3 billion

The Halifax Regional Municipality announced the beginning of 2025/26 municipal budget process by tabling a preliminary $1.3 billion operating budget and a $318.8 million capital plan.

The 2025/26 municipal budget is a “transitional budget,” said a Friday news release. It will be the first budget under the recently elected regional council and the final budget of the 2021-25 Strategic Priorities Plan.

Each business unit will present their 2025/26 budget and business plans in coming weeks with time for the public to provide insights and comments in-person or virtually.

The Budget Committee will review the Budget Adjustment List (BAL). The BAL includes items added or subtracted after the preliminary budget.

In April, regional council will approve the final budget along with business and capital plans.

Every year, regional council approves the budget, business plan and capital plan. These documents represent the annual municipal budget and fund all costs associated with servicing the municipality.
