A family-owned restaurant in Halifax will soon be celebrating more than six-and-a-half decades of serving its community.
Look Ho Ho Restaurant has been serving traditional Chinese food for nearly 66 years.
“The best egg roll in town,” said restaurant owner Catherine Lau. “The chicken and beef broccoli are the most popular menu item.”
Opened in 1959, the restaurant has built a reputation not only for its classic dishes, but its deep connection to people both living in Halifax and passing through the city.
“I heard a customer saying that when they were a kid, their grandparents and parents bring them here and generations continue [to come].”
Since the restaurant opened decades ago, the interior has not changed.
For long-time employee, Lori Martel, Look Ho Ho reminds her of her childhood.
“As a child, my grandmother lived on Robie Street so this was one of her go-to places. It’s basically a landmark. I always passed it and thought, ‘Wow’ and now I work here.”
Now 11 years later, Martel said it is more than just the food that is keeping her there.
“I just love the fact that we are all like family and treated like family, respect and it’s just a fun atmosphere.”
Lau said the appreciation from employees and customers makes the restaurant even more special.
“We are very grateful to have continued support.”
As Look Ho Ho marks 66-years, Lau said it is a milestone worth celebrating, and one she owes to the restaurant’s loyal customers who always seem to find their way back.
