A 57-year-old man was arrested after allegedly barricading inside a building on his property in Gabarus, N.S., and uttering threats.

The Cape Breton Regional Police responded to a report of an altercation between two people on Forchu Road around 7 p.m. Sunday.

“One person had assaulted and threatened the other before returning to his neighboring home, where he was believed to have a firearm,” reads a news release from Cape Breton Regional Police.

Police say officers found the man inside a building on his property on Jessie Hardy Lane and he refused to exit.

Crisis negotiators were called to help and the Emergency Response team also assisted because there was a possibility the man had a firearm.

According to police, the man exited his building around 1 a.m. and was not in possession of a firearm.

He was arrested and released on the promise to appear in Sydney provincial court to face charges of assault and uttering threats to damage property and cause bodily harm or death.
