A man from Sydney, N.S., is facing charges after he allegedly threatened a family while they were shopping in a store.

Cape Breton Regional Police responded around 8 p.m. Tuesday to the store in Sydney River, where a woman reported a man she knew had made threatening comments towards her and her children inside the store and then left.

Police say officers found the vehicle the man was driving in Sydney, before finding him in another store about an hour after the incident.

The force says officers arrested the man.

“Through further investigation officers also identified the man as responsible for threats and assault in a second earlier incident,” reads a news release from police.

Ryan Michael Tubrett was held in police custody. He appeared in Sydney provincial court Wednesday to face charges of:

  • two counts of uttering threats to cause death
  • uttering threats to cause damage to property
