A 36-year-old man faces a number of charges after police say he barricaded himself in a home in Wagmatcook, N.S., armed with a gun.

Victoria County District RCMP responded to a report of an altercation between two people on Twin Lane around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday.

When officers arrived, police say they learned one of the men was “acting erratically” and left with a knife.

“Police located the man at a residence on Humes Rear East Loop and found that he was in possession of a firearm, in addition to the previously reported knife,” said an RCMP news release.

“The man made threats to himself and to officers on scene, and attempted to leave the area in two different stolen vehicles.”

The force says the man allegedly then broke into another unoccupied home and barricaded himself inside.

RCMP issued a civil emergency for Victoria, Inverness and Cape Breton counties via Alert Ready.

Police dispatched crisis negotiators alongside the RCMP emergency response team, police dog services, air services, and traffic services to support the police on the scene.

Police say Coady James Isadore exited the home and was arrested around 7:20 p.m.

Isadore is facing a total of 22 new charges in addition to previous charges from an outstanding warrant.

The new charges include:

- break and enter to a dwelling house

- dangerous operation of a conveyance (vehicle)

- uttering threats

- several firearms offences including pointing a firearm

- nine counts of failure to comply with a release order

Coady remains in custody and was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

Victoria County District RCMP said it continues to investigate the initial altercation.
