New Halifax basketball team hopes to score big with community

Published:

The Halifax Hoopers, the city's new pro basketball team, is ready to make their mark on the court and in the community.

Following the Halifax Hurricanes’ departure from the National Basketball League of Canada in 2021, fans have been looking another major professional team to root for.

The Hoopers have joined The Basketball League (TBL) as one of only two Canadian teams. They will be one of 16 squads in the eastern conference.

“We want to give the fans in HRM another options,” said head coach Augy Jones. “I want to young players, whether they’re male or female, to dream and see players they’re connected to authentically.”

“Other players can be inspired to follow in their footsteps,” said owner Geoffrey Clyke. “It just gives them a chance and a hope and an idea. Basketball can do that.”

Player Brandon Beloti said he’s excited to connect with his teammates and the wider community.

“We want to put Halifax on the map,” he said.

The team will have its debut game against the Tri-State Admirals at the Zatzman Sportsplex at 7 p.m. on April 18. They will return to the Sportsplex to face the Tri-City Tide on April 20.
