A new permanent exhibit at the Museum of Natural History in Halifax is offering visitors a chance to explore the breadth and depth of Mi’kmaw culture.

Pjila’si” officially opens to the public on Friday. It is an interactive space that aims to expand visitors’ knowledge about Indigenous heritage.

“Folks will see a lot of colour and a lot of cultural belongings and artifacts,” said Laura Bennett, director of the Nova Scotia Museum. “There are lots of opportunities to learn more about the Mi’kmaw language.

“Some of these items have been part of our collection for years. There’s a wealth of different material here.”

Bennett said the museum has worked with a Mi’kmaw advisory group for years to put the exhibition together.

“It really reflects the richness of Mi’kmaw heritage,” Bennett said. “I think it’s really important for us to recognize that the Mi’kmaw people continue to be a thriving people in this province.”
