Premier Tim Houston was in attendance for a sod-turning ceremony to announce additional funding for the expansion of the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, N.S., Thursday.
The project is supported by all three levels of government. As part of the joint funding, the provincial government is spending an additional $3 million for a total of $7 million, said a Thursday news release.
Houston said the Mariners Centre expansion will be a significant milestone for the region.
“The Mariners Centre expansion will not only provide modern recreational facilities but will also serve as a hub for community connection, health and wellness for generations to come,” Houston said.
Kerry Muise is the fundraising campaign manager for the Mariners Centre expansion. She said the community is grateful for the increase in funding.
Seeing all levels of government, including First Nations, work collaboratively on this project breeds success and support,” Muise said. “There is no stopping a community that works like that.”
The province announced a $4 million contribution to the expansion in 2022. The expansion includes:
- a barrier free aquatics centre with a 25-metre, six-lane pool with leisure pool
- a fitness centre with cardio equipment, weights and wellness programs
- an indoor walking track and multi-purpose spaces.
The Centre remains open during the expansion which is projected to finish in 2026.
