RCMP in Nova Scotia charged a Truro man in connection with an ongoing fraud investigation, said a Thursday news release.

Colchester County District RCMP said they received multiple reports that someone “using high-pressure sale tactics to convince people to pay for home security system monitoring and upgrades” between Jan. 2024 and Feb. 2025.

Police said victims were convinced to make payments via cash, e-transfers or cheques.

Officers charged Brian Detheridge, 54, with fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime after arresting him on March 5, said the release.

Detheridge was released with conditions. He is forbidden from working in home security sales, upgrades, installation or monitoring. He is scheduled to appear in Truro provincial court on May 7.

Investigators said they believe perpetrators were active in Cumberland, East Hants and Truro and that more victims, who have yet to realize they’ve been victimized, may come forward.

“I know that victims of frauds may feel awkward or embarrassed,” says Cpl. Terry Brown, Community Action Team leader. “However, reporting scams can help prevent other victims and we appreciate those who have spoken to us as part of this investigation.”

Police ask that anyone who has been a victim of this fraud and anyone who has information about it contact Colchester County District RCMP at 902-893-6820, or the local police. To remain anonymous, people can contact Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers toll-free, at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), by submitting a secure web tip at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca, or using the P3 Tips app.
