Hope for Wildlife in Nova Scotia is currently looking after an old, feathered visitor who travelled from the United States.
Hope Swinimer, founder of Hope for Wildlife, said they recently found a red-tailed hawk with a broken wing. They took it in to care for it and learned it also had a leg band that revealed it’s originally from Pennsylvania.
“He’s 21 years old, which is incredibly old for a red-tailed hawk,” Swinimer said. “The usual life expectancy is 12-to-15 years.”
The red-tailed hawk is one of the most common birds in North America. Swinimer said they are quite popular in Nova Scotia.
“We have a healthy population,” she said. “He’ll have a really good chance of getting back to a nice habitat.”
