Nova Scotia announced its support for a new housing development at Beinn Mhàbu – a satellite campus of Nova Scotia’s Gaelic College, Colaisde na Gàidhlig – in a Friday news release. The province said it will spend nearly $3 million over two years on the college’s $4.9 million project.
The development will include 24 housing units to “increase the housing supply in western Cape Breton.” Construction will begin immediately and is scheduled to be finished in January 2026.
Kyle MacQuarrie, ministerial assistant for Gaelic affairs and MLA for Inverness, said the housing will create more options for Nova Scotia’s Gaelic students.
“Housing continues to be a priority as we work with our post-secondary and other partners to identify opportunities to build the housing people across the province need,” MacQuarrie said.
Students will use the housing during the school year. It will be available for seasonal workers and tourists from May to August.
“This is a historic day for Colaisde na Gàidhlig and Beinn Mhàbu and will make a difference for our students and the broader community,” said president Rodney MacDonald of the Gaelic College.
