Public meeting in Glace Bay, N.S., after power outages

Published:

A public meeting over power outages in Glace Bay, N.S., was held on Monday.

A public meeting was held Monday evening at the Glace Bay Miner’s Forum in Glace Bay, N.S., in response to power outages that left about 10,000 Nova Scotia Power customers in the area without electricity.

The outages impacted customers in Glace Bay and surrounding communities on January 24 and 25.

Dave MacKeigan is a Cape Breton Regional Municipality councillor. He said he welcomed the chance for open dialogue between the utility the public. He said Nova Scotia Power is making repairs on the ground since the outages.

“They’ve hit the road running right off the bat after our last meeting,” MacKeigan said. “There’s twelve crews on the go in Glace Bay at any given time. They’re putting new poles in, they’re putting all new equipment in, and they’re working on the transformer on Reserve Street. So it looks like they’re putting a big investment in the town to get it up to where it should be.”

Nova Scotia Power said the outage was caused by a damaged transformer at its Reserve Street substation.

The utility said it was committed to replacing and upgrading aging infrastructure and equipment in the community.
