The P.E.I. RCMP says a 15-year-old has been charged following an incident involving an off-duty officer last week.

The officer entered a gas station on the Trans-Canada Highway in Bonshaw around 6:30 p.m. on April 1.

While waiting in line to pay, police say the officer noticed a person behind them that smelled of alcohol.

The officer approached the person after they got into the driver’s seat of a vehicle, according to an RCMP news release.

“During the course of the conversation, the person repeatedly shoved the officer and attempted to return to their vehicle,” reads the RCMP release.

The officer called 911 and asked for help from another police officer.

Police say the officer then restrained the person on the ground.

“Witnesses attempted to intervene, and on at least two occasions the officer identified themselves as a member of the PEI RCMP, asking them to refrain from intervening. Other officers arrived on scene and were able to take the individual into custody,” the release reads.

The 15-year-old has been charged with assaulting a police officer.

Police say their investigation is ongoing.
