A cult classic production is taking over the Neptune Theatre stage.
“Little Shop of Horrors” is now playing in Halifax, marking the Neptune debuts of award-winning musicians Reeny Smith and Owen Lee.
Lee lends his voice to Audrey II, the blood-thirsty plant at the heart of the musical.
“I’m back there with a microphone just having the time of my life in my own bubble while everyone else is on stage getting eaten or dancing,” said Lee.
He says the role has challenged him to push beyond his usual upbeat personality.
“I’m a jolly person naturally, but I kind of have to be a bit cynical to be a man-eating plant.”
And yes – the plant really does appear to eat people.
“There’s a slide in there,” Lee said. “So, to the crowd, it looks like someone is being eaten by a plant. But to the person being eaten, it’s actually kind of a fun experience.”

Joining him on stage is singer-songwriter Reeny Smith, who plays one of the sassy, scene-stealing urchins.
“We get to do a lot of fun dance routines and we sing three part harmony the whole show,” said Smith. “It was pretty intense, but I loved every minute of it. I’m just happy I got the opportunity to do it, learn something new, and get outside of my own comfort zone.”
Lee called the experience overwhelming in the best way.
“To make that pivot into a world like this, and collaborate with so many talented cast members, actors, and dancers, it was incredible,” he said.
The production has drawn both long-time fans and first-time viewers.
“Every night we see people from young to very old,” said Lee. “Some who’ve watched the movie since the 80s, and others who’ve never seen it before – but they all appreciate the music, the choreography, and the script.”
“It gives you all the feels,” said Smith. “There are moments of joy, moments of sadness… you get a little bit of everything, and we try to tell the story the best way we can.”
Little Shop of Horrors runs at Neptune Theatre in Halifax until May 11.
