East Coast singer-songwriter Jenn Grant is sharing some of her most personal stories yet on her upcoming album “Queen of the Strait.” “It’s actually kind of an homage to my mother,” Grant in an interview with CTV Atlantic’s Katie Kelly. The record revisits memories of travelling across the Northumberland Strait while her parents were separating. “Basically, how our mother turned heartbreak into a series of adventures and magic and instilled that in us,” said Grant. The album’s recording process was just as personal. “It was co-produced with Daniel Ledwell, my partner, and Joshua Van Tassel… and it is all live off the floor,” said Grant. “We took some things like baby quilts and other things of mine and hung it up in the studio… and we had a lot of candles. It was a very intimate experience.” And when she takes the album on the road for upcoming “Cradled by the Waves Tour,” Grant says audiences won’t just hear the songs, they’ll step inside them. “There’s film, art, dance, movement. It’s an immersive experience for the audience,” said Grant. She hopes the music helps listeners connect with their own emotions and memories. “It’s about sharing what I feel is very genuine and wanting to use my songs as a jumping off point for other people to connect to their own stories, their own grief,” she says. “Queen of the Straight” is set for release on March 6. Grant’s “Cradled by the Waves Tour” stops in Charlottetown March 5, Moncton May 1, and Halifax on May 2.
