The Gibson Centre in Alliston was the site of an inaugural International Women’s Day event on Saturday that brought nearly 50 vendors together and welcomed women from across the region to celebrate and support each other.
The event was organized by Fuelled By Females, featuring entrepreneurs, authors, food vendors, handmade vendors, and marketing seminars for small businesses among other activities.
“It is important every day to celebrate women, however, we do get one day a year that recognizes the efforts of women around the world,” said Nicole Brown, the event’s organizer. “I think that it is important to collect and collaborate with one another to support one another, celebrate our strengths, learn from one another, and really just realize that we are better together, we’re better when we’re a community, [and] that is what today is all about.”
The event also supported local organizations such as the My Sister’s Place women’s shelter in Alliston and the Community Living Association (CLASS) for South Simcoe.
My Sister’s Place helps women and children who are in crisis, while CLASS helps adults with developmental disabilities lead dignified lives within the community.
“It’s extremely important for me and for every single woman who’s here to support [My Sister’s Place] because many of us have been in that situation where we need somewhere safe to go,” added Brown. “I think it’s important to give back to an organization that helps women get a fresh start on their life.”
Diane Kruck from CLASS helped some of their female members sell dog biscuits, which also helped them earn a paycheque.
“This program offers the opportunity for skill building, connecting with the community, and also offers an opportunity to make a couple of dollars as well,” said Kruck. “We love coming out into the community and participating with others, and it’s great to celebrate women.”
