Flag banners are on display at the Barrie Legion in honour of local veterans.

The 80th anniversary marking the end of the Second World War approaches on May 8, and the Barrie Legion has raised 19 new flags to remember those veterans.

Branch historian Steve Glover hopes the flags remind the public of the sacrifices made by members of the community.

“I hope they remember to remember because we say at the Barrie Legion, lest we forget even though the war took place over 80 years ago, so many people do not remember the names of the people who served our country,” Glover said. “It’s a hope that we can bring this information back and we can celebrate and commemorate at this time.”

All flags surrounding the legion will have men and women who served in the Second World War, and all lived or grew up in Simcoe County.

Glover adds when he first joined the legion, he had no idea of the history in Simcoe County during Second World War.

“It became my desire to make sure, knowing we are coming up on the 80th anniversary that we would try to remember these people,” Glover said.

The Barrie Legion will hold several events leading up the commemoration of the 80th anniversary including an official flag unveiling on May 7 with a ceremony and parade the following day.
