Lawyers for the prosecution and defence made a brief teleconference appearance Tuesday morning to address the second discreditable conduct charge against Barrie police Insp. Valarie Gates under the Police Services Act.
The proceedings are a result of what Barrie Police Service called an “on-duty internal incident” involving the veteran officer and another member of Barrie Police.
Gates was first charged with a single count of discreditable conduct under the Police Services Act in December 2023 and then again in June 2024.
Prosecutor Jessica Barrow said the second hearing results from an investigation that arose in the course of another matter involving the same officer.
Tuesday’s proceedings were presided over by adjudicator Greg Walton and was adjourned to April 9 over teleconference. The lawyers met Monday as well to address the first charge.
The defence reiterated certain disclosure remains outstanding from the Ontario Provincial Police, who conducted the investigation when its Office of Professionalism, Respect, Inclusion and Leadership became involved in the case.
