The City of Orillia is driving forward efforts to curb speeding with new automated radar cameras.

The City of Orillia is one step closer to curbing speeding in community safety zone with automated photo radar cameras.

Mayor Don McIsaac said council had determined the “most effective locations” for the cameras with “the greatest impact” to improve safety based on a data-driven review.

City council gave the green light to three locations for the future cameras, Fittons Road West, Park Street and Westmount Drive South.

“We’ve done extensive analysis to determine the best locations for these cameras,” said Steven Murphy, transportation project engineer. “By focusing on high-risk areas, we are making sure this program directly addresses the speeding issues that pose the greatest danger to pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.”

However, before the cameras are up and running, the City needs to finalize agreements with the province and Hydro One.

Additionally, signage is required for installation of the photo radar cameras, including a 90-day notice for motorists.

The City says traffic bylaws will be amended to permanently lower speed limits in the designated areas to 40 km/h.

The cameras are expected to be installed by the fall.
