‘Coming Soon’ signs installed in Orillia mean photo radar cameras are soon to be activated

Signage has been installed in to notify motorists in Orillia that automated speed enforcement cameras will soon be activated.

The City has been working towards pumping the brakes on poor driving behaviours for months, and now that the required “Coming Soon” signs are up, it’s only a matter of time - 90 days in fact - before the photo radar cameras are operational.

"Automated speed enforcement is an important tool in our efforts to improve road safety and reduce speeding in high-risk areas,” said Mayor Don McIsaac. “With the signage now in place, we are one step closer to activating this program and enhancing safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.”

The City will finalize agreements with the Ministry of the Attorney General, Ministry of Transportation and Hydro One over the coming months to complete the additional infrastructure work and system testing for launch.

The three cameras will be installed in community safety zones, typically near schools, to help improve driving behaviours.

Following data compiled by City staff, Fittons Road West, Park Street, and Westmount Drive south were identified as priority locations “based on speed and safety.”

The cameras are expected to be fully operational later this spring or early summer. Once activated, the Coming Soon signs will be replaced with ‘Speed Camera In Use’ signage.
