Muskoka Lakes fire crews reportedly responded to a chimney fire in the Port Carling area on Thursday afternoon, prompting reminders for homeowners to regularly inspect their chimneys.

According to the Muskoka Lakes Fire Department, the incident occurred at a Foreman Road home, where responding firefighters used extinguishing agent to put out the flames that were escaping the chimney.

Muskoka Lakes fire officials say the occupant who was present did a great job of initially controlling the fire before emergency crews arrived.

Responding firefighters eventually confirmed the appliance and chimney safe using thermal imaging inspection techniques.

Homeowners with chimneys are reminded to have them inspected annually by a qualified professional.

The Muskoka Lakes Fire Department referred to Wood Energy Technology Transfer Inc. as a resource that promotes safe and effective use of wood burning systems across the country.
