Country artist brings unique sound to Kempenfest summer lineup

A local country artist was added to the star-studded Kempenfest summer lineup.

Local country artist Sully Burrows is set to bring his unique sound to the 2025 Kempenfest lineup this summer. The Parry Sound native was recently announced as a performer for the long-running festival, which takes place from August 1 to 3.

Kempenfest, which is celebrating its 53rd year, will feature a range of performances on the OLG Mainstage, including headliners Sean Desmond, Colin James, Washboard Union and the Tragically Hip tribute band: The Practically Hip.

For Burrows, the opportunity marks a major milestone in his career. “It’s pretty cool. Honestly, I’ve never been, so I’m excited to just see what it’s like and be able to play there,” he said.

Burrows music blends modern country influences with traditional sounds and he credits his passion for country music to his upbringing in Parry Sound, where country was always playing in the background of his home.

“I listened to a bunch of different styles of music growing up, but country music was definitely the one that I always came back to,” Burrows explained. “Writing country songs just feels natural to me.”

In addition to his recent performance in Pickering with established country artist Dylan Scott, Burrows continues to learn from veterans of the music industry.

“It’s always cool,” explained Burrows. “I look at different people’s live performances differently now, trying to pick up on things that I could improve on. It’s really about repetition and getting those opportunities.”

His sound draws influence from a wide range of country artists, but Burrows names Riley Green and Connor Smith as inspirations.

“I try to take as much as I can from each of the artists I listen to,” said Burrows.

Other influences include classic names like Alan Jackson and Travis Tritt, all of which have shaped his approach to country music.

Karen Hopkins, vice-president of sponsorship and marketing for Admiral Live, the organization behind Kempenfest, expressed the importance of local representation.

“We’re thrilled to announce Sully Burrows as part of our Sunday night lineup. We’re also showcasing other local and up-and-coming talent throughout the festival,” said Hopkins. “It’s incredibly important to highlight the talents of local musicians and offer them a platform to reach a wider audience.”

Tickets for the event go on sale this Friday.
