A grass fire that sent thick smoke into the sky near a residential area in Aurora has been fully extinguished, according to Central York Fire Services (CYFS).
Crews were called to the area around Scrivener Drive and William Graham Drive in Aurora on Wednesday after residents reported seeing smoke near the David Tomlinson Nature Reserve. While on route, CYFS received multiple calls describing a growing fire producing large plums of smoke.
Six fire trucks and two dozen firefighters attended the scene. Fire crews worked quickly to bring the flames under control, dousing the fire and then extinguishing several hot spots to prevent it from reigniting.
Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas acknowledged the incident in a Facebook message Wednesday, noting, “Many residents have expressed concern after noticing significant smoke in the sky earlier today,” he wrote. “Crews applied water and were successful in extinguishing the fire. Fortunately, there have been no injuries reported and no damage to nearby homes. At this time, the cause of the fire remains undetermined.”
By early evening, fire officials confirmed the fire had been fully extinguished, and crews remained on site to monitor for further risk.
