Enbridge transfer station emits smell of natural gas

A strong smell of gas at an Innisfil gas transfer station closed area roads in the town south of Barrie.

Shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday, a loud hissing sound and the smell of natural gas emitted from an Enbridge Gas station at 4118 Innisfil Beach Road, said Innisfil Fire Chief Brent Thomas.

Two houses in the vicinity were evacuated.

Innisfil Fire has isolated the area within 300 metres of the transfer station.

South Simcoe Police closed Innisfil Beach Road at Line 5 and Ontario Provincial Police closed the road at Highway 27 for several hours.

By 8:45 a.m., South Simcoe Police had released the scene to Enbridge Gas, which had investigated the cause of the leak and determined it was safe to reopen the roads by 9 a.m.

“It was not a gas leak, but rather an odourant issue,” said Leanne McNaughton, spokesperson for Enbridge.

“The team is working on the odourant valve right now and anticipate it being completed shortly. All is safe,” she said.
