Main downtown Barrie artery closes for 9 weeks

Starting Monday, a section of Simcoe Street will be closed in Barrie as part of the city’s Sophia Creek Owen Tributary Storm outlet project.

Reducing flooding in downtown Barrie is going to take about nine weeks.

As part of the Sophia Creek Owen Tributary Storm Outlet infrastructure project, the closure will facilitate installation of a new trunk storm sewer from Simcoe Street to the Bayfield basin in Heritage Park.

The project that was started last August will be finished in June.

For this portion of the work however, Simcoe Street will be closed on February 10 until mid-April.

Due to the crane and culvert installation portion of the construction, Simcoe Street will also be closed to pedestrians and detours will be in place:

• Eastbound detour: Simcoe Street – Bayfield Street – Dunlop Street – Simcoe Street
• Westbound detour: Dunlop Street – Toronto Street – Simcoe Street

City staff say there will be no access on Simcoe Street from the Lakeshore Mews’ west entrance to Bayfield Street, however, traffic will be allowed to travel from Dunlop Street to the Lakeshore Mews’ west entrance.
