All competition was stopped as a player fell ill during a firefighters versus police officers hockey game.
The inaugural 911 Crosstown Hockey Game between Barrie firefighters and police officers was well underway when the emergency occurred Tuesday evening.
Police confirmed an officer had a medical emergency at the beginning of the third period while in the penalty box.
The game was stopped, and team members on both sides of the rink took a knee together and said a prayer for their fallen teammate.
Police report the officer was taken to the hospital to be treated for the undisclosed medical episode. “The officer is stable and recovering in the hospital,” the Barrie Police Service noted, adding thanks to those who jumped in to help.
The charity hockey game raises money for Hospice Simcoe. Barrie police say thousands attended the event.
