Orillia OPP held a donation drive for International Women’s Day on Saturday at the Murphy Road Walmart to support the Green Haven Shelter for Women.

According to the detachment, their cadet and auxiliary members collected donated food and household items throughout the day. They also collected nearly $2,300 in cash donations.

In light of International Women’s Day, Const. Sophie Gwin encourages women who are interested in policing to consider joining OPP.

“Women are underrepresented within the OPP and in policing in general,” said Const. Gwin, in an email to CTV News. “Having officers from various backgrounds and with different life experiences can offer fresh perspectives during investigations.”

The Green Haven Shelter for Women provides safety, shelter, and other supports for those experiencing gender-based violence and abuse.
