The City of Barrie is alerting transit riders to a fraudulent social media post falsely advertising six-month passes for an incredibly cheap rate.
The post was created on Facebook by an account called Public Transport in Barrie, which has no other posts, one follower and one like. The allegedly fraudulent post claims to be celebrating Barrie Transit’s 50th anniversary by offering “a limited edition transportation card” with free rides for six months for only $3.65, and has a link to click for more information.
“This offer is not legitimate and did not originate from the City of Barrie or Barrie Transit,” the City stated on Monday.
According to the City, a Barrie Transit day pass runs $8.50 per day, with monthly passes for adults costing $92 per month. Passes are available for purchase at any Barrie recreational centre, Service Barrie at City Hall or at the Barrie Transit Terminal on Maple Avenue.
Passes can also be purchased on the HotSpot app or website.
