It’s going to be an evening of culture, cuisine and epic poetic experiences at “SPEAK YOUR Truth! A Black Canadian history and arts showcase at Bloom Bistro in Barrie.

“I want those that attend to learn more – about poetry, about how people speak – about loving each other,” says Bloom Bistro owner, Nalini Parshad.

Saturday night in Barrie is about to get a boost of Black culture with flavourful Caribbean foods, soulful dance, song and spoken word.

The event is organized by Barrie’s fourth poet laureate, Tyneisha Thomas and the collection of performances, is meant to make a lasting mark

“This is a Black history month celebration, but it’s not just Black history month, it’s Black excellence, it’s Black history every day – we’re doing it on March 1st so the celebrations keep going on,” shared Thomas, also known as “Ty the Poetess.”

Featuring artists from Simcoe County, the evening will offer Caribbean dishes from a customized menu, with entertainment just as diverse to match.

“Poetry in itself, is an art form, that you can do by yourself but once you’re able to share, it becomes so much more,” says poet and artist Jayven Smith, who will be performing on Saturday night.

“I feel like being able to share your art, it inspires others to do, not necessary poetry themselves, but to express themselves in anyway they feel inspired to do,” added Smith.

The doors open at 5:30pm and everyone is welcome.

“I would love for people to learn more about the culture but also to meet someone new, go out, have a drink, try some new food, Caribbean food, dance and have fun,” says Thomas.

The SPEAK YOUR Truth! showcase is on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. and entry is free.
