Video shows suspect holding wired device for mere seconds at front door before pickup truck is stolen

Barrie police are investigating after two Dodge Ram pickup trucks were stolen from driveways in the city’s southwest end while their owners were asleep.

Police say the first theft happened early Wednesday morning on Kodiak Terrace. According to the authorities, the white 2023 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck with the Ontario licence plate BP61557 was started up and driven away.

Investigators say in that case video surveillance in the area appears to have been disabled, and no footage of the theft was captured.

The second incident happened around 2:30 a.m. Thursday at a home on Penvill Trail. This time, video surveillance captured an unknown man, dressed in dark clothing, approaching the front door of the home and holding up some sort of wired device. Less than a minute later, the truck’s lights flashed, the engine started, and the white 2024 Dodge Ram 1500 with Ontario licence plate BZ59352 was driven away.

Officers canvassed both neighbourhoods, but no additional surveillance footage has been found to help identify a suspect.

Barrie police remind vehicle owners to take precautions against theft, including using a Faraday pouch for key fobs, installing an ignition kill switch or tracking system, and keeping keys away from the front door. Additional deterrents, such as steering wheel locks, onboard diagnostic port locks, and accelerator locks, are also recommended. If a garage is unavailable, police suggest parking other vehicles around a truck to help prevent theft.

Residents looking to protect their key fobs can pick up a free Faraday pouch at Barrie police headquarters on Fairview Drive with valid identifications.
