‘We can’t do it alone,' Sanctuary calls on public to help dig animals out

Ralphy’s Retreat is buried in snow and pleading for volunteers to grab a shovel and help dig out pigs, goats and more.

A relentless winter has buried Ralphy’s Retreat Animal Sanctuary in Wyebridge under deep snow, leaving its residents in desperate need of help. The sanctuary, which provides a home for rescued farm animals, is struggling to keep up with snow removal, and volunteers are urgently needed to dig out pens and pathways.

The sanctuary’s team of 30 dedicated volunteers have been working tirelessly to clear the snow, but the latest storm has left them overwhelmed. Some areas have over two feet of snow, with deeper drifts caused by wind. Many of the sanctuary’s animals—pigs, goats, horses, cows, sheep, and alpacas—are struggling to move through the heavy snow, and nearly 60 per cent of them are elderly or have disabilities, making the conditions even more challenging.

“This winter has tested us—our volunteers, our finances, and most importantly, our residents,” the sanctuary posted on its Facebook page. “Last night, every pig had a path to get out. This morning, those paths are buried, their doors blocked by yet another heavy snowfall. And so, we shovel again.”

On Saturday at 10 a.m., Ralphy’s Retreat will host a ‘Shovel Us Out’ party, calling on community members to bring shovels and snow blowers to help clear pathways. The sanctuary hopes this event will restore safe access for the animals to move freely. It’s also an opportunity for local teens to earn community service hours while lending a hand.

“Pigs can feel frustration, sadness, and boredom just like we do. Our seniors struggle more than ever with arthritis, making every step a challenge,” the sanctuary explained.

Increased feed and bedding costs, along with constant snow removal, have stretched resources to the limit. Donations of hay, straw, blankets, and feed are urgently needed to help the animals stay warm and well-fed.

“We’ve never had to put out a request like this before,” the animal retreat noted. “But we just can’t do it alone.”

As winter continues its icy grip, Ralphy’s Retreat at 39 Darby Road is hoping for a break in the weather—and a helping hand from the community to keep their rescued animals safe and comfortable until spring finally arrives.
