‘Highly impactful winter storm’ headed to Barrie and area

A “highly impactful winter storm” is headed our way.

Environment Canada issued a winter storm watch that spreads from York Region through Simcoe County, Grey Bruce and up to Muskoka.

The storm is expected to move into the area Wednesday evening and ease off by Thursday afternoon.

The national weather agency says northeasterly winds gusting up to 50 kilometres per hour could result in blowing snow and reduced driving visibility.

A snow squall warning has also been issued Tuesday for Huntsville, Baysville, Parry Sound, Rosseau and Killbear Park. These regions may only get two to four centimetres of snow, but drivers are to watch for snow squalls and heavy blowing snow.

The agency says to avoid travel if possible and if not, carry an emergency kit and mobile phone.

Provincial police urge motorists to adjust their driving to the changing weather.

“Whiteout conditions can change in an instant. Blowing snow & zero visibility make driving dangerous. Even with emergency lights flashing at an accident scene, you might not see them until it’s too late,' Huronia West OPP stated on Tuesday.

Provincial police also remind motorists involved in collisions to remain in their vehicles for their safety and the safety of others.

”If you don’t have to drive in these conditions, please stay home. Protect yourself and our first responders," police concluded.
