TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index fell by more than 300 points Monday, weighed down by losses in the basic materials sector. The S&P/TSX composite index was down 311.03 points at 35,489.86. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 347.11 points at 51,481.51. The S&P 500 index was down 59.72 points at 7,683.69, while the Nasdaq composite was down 248.34 points at 26,820.38. The Canadian dollar traded for 70.58 cents US compared with 70.70 cents US on Friday. The November crude oil contract was up 19 cents US at US$92.60 per barrel.
