Albert Park/Radisson Heights shooting connected to organized crime: Calgary police

Published:

Police say a drive-by shooting in southeast Calgary last night was a targeted attack and showed a complete disregard for public safety.

A shooting that left multiple people injured in the southeast community of Albert Park/Radisson Heights on Tuesday night was related to organized crime, according to Calgary police.

Police were called to the 2700 block of 12 Avenue S.E. around 6:55 p.m. for reports of shots fired. It is believed gunfire was exchanged between two vehicles in the area.

The suspect fled before police arrived.

“I heard a very distinct ‘pop, pop, pop.’ Maybe 10 or more. I thought it was fireworks. I just got my baby down, so I was like, ‘What the heck?’ I looked out and a dark grey Toyota drove past here. I could see shots through the windows,” witness Emily Hunt said.

A person was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition but was upgraded to stable condition shortly after. As of Wednesday afternoon, police said the victim remained in stable condition.

Another person believed to be connected to the incident was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released from hospital.

While no members of the public were injured during the shooting, police said stray bullets likely struck nearby homes.

“It’s pretty quiet on this street. There’s definitely not anything close to this normally going on, especially with the park there. It’s very, very safe, so that was a shock for sure,” Hunt said.

Four people were taken into custody, but two have since been released. No charges have been laid in relation to the incident.

Police believe the shooting was targeted and there is no ongoing risk to the community.

Investigators say the incident was a result of organized crime conflict.

“The level of violence displayed during this incident is very concerning,” says Staff Sgt. Matthew Gow of the organized crime and offender management section.

“Several shots were fired between two vehicles in a busy residential area where citizens were going about their day.
