Breakaway roping event coming to the Calgary Stampede

Published:

Ladies breakaway will make its debut at the Calgary Stampede rodeo this year.

The Calgary Stampede will be adding a new sport to its rodeo repertoire this summer.

In association with the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA), the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth is welcoming ladies’ breakaway roping in 2025.

Touted as one of the fastest-growing rodeo events, breakaway roping involves chasing and roping a calf.

Once the animal is caught, the rider stops the horse and then “breaks” the rope from the saddle in the fastest time.

It’s lightning-quick, so don’t blink as some of the winning times have come in at under two seconds.

The Stampede says the concept of the event is simple, but the challenge all comes down to flawless execution.

“This event celebrates the incredible talent of female ropers and our dedication to elevating women’s events in rodeo, while also offering another world-class experience for our guests,” said Joel Cowley, CEO of the Calgary Stampede, in a release.

The breakaway roping event has been officially sanctioned by the WPRA, which means winners will earn prize money that counts toward their world standings.

“Not only taking this step to add breakaway roping to their daily rodeo but to include it at equal money is exceptional,” said Heidi Schmidt, WRPA president.

“Showcasing our members in barrel racing and now breakaway roping in 2025 and beyond reflects our shared conviction of the importance of providing equal opportunity for women in rodeo.”

Over the 10 days of rodeo competition, $310,250 in prize money will be handed out to 30 breakaway roping competitors.
