Calgary police lay first-degree murder charge in December 2023 shooting

Published:

Calgary police have laid a first-degree murder charge in the targeted killing of 43-year-old Donald Lyons.

Charges have been laid in connection with a December 2023 shooting in Calgary that left a man dead and a woman injured.

Paulos Berhe, 29, is charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Police announced the charges on Thursday, a day after Berhe’s arrest, which involved tactical officers joining investigators to raid a home in the 0 to 100 block of Erin Ridge Road S.E.

Berhe is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

The charges stem from a deadly shooting that occurred the night of Dec. 18, 2023, the 1800 block of 35 Street S.E.

A woman in her 30s was also injured. Police confirmed Thursday that the woman has recovered, physically.

Police said at the time that the incident was targeted, and both the suspect and Lyons knew each other.

“Due to the level of pre-planning and criminality involved, investigations such as this one are historically difficult to solve,” Staff Sgt. Mark Rahn said in a release on Thursday.

“Our investigators spent countless hours pouring over the evidence in this case in the pursuit of justice for Donald’s family.”

Lyons' mother Heather told CTV News the charges were a relief.

“We are so relieved to be closer to having justice for Donald and so grateful to the Calgary police for all the hard work that they put into finding the person that took his life,” she said.

Lyons said she had never heard of the name of her son’s alleged killer.

“Everyone loved him,” she said.

“I never knew anyone who had anything bad to say about him.

“He loved his family. They were his priority.”

She said Donald was the father of three children and had two grandsons, adding that she hoped he would be remembered “for his kindness and love.”

“He would always help anyone who needed help. He was kind and loving and he did everything for me,” she said.

“And he is so missed.”
