Calgary police are looking to the public for help identifying a suspect in a southeast arson over the summer. Police say patrol officers noticed heavy smoke at 12:25 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, and determined it was from a fire in a detached garage in the 1800 block of 42 Street S.E. “Investigators believe the suspect approached the detached garage, lit a piece of paper on fire and placed it under the garage door,” said in a Tuesday news release. Police have released photos of the suspect, believed to be between 16 and 24 years old. Because she may be a minor, police blurred the suspect’s face before releasing the photos. She’s described as about 5′4″ tall (163 centimetres) with a slim build and is believed to frequent the community of Forest Lawn. She was wearing an all-black tracksuit, a black baseball cap and white shoes, and was carrying a black-and-pink backpack. Police say the fire caused approximately $50,000 in damage. Anyone with information about the fire or the identity of the suspect is asked to call police at 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
