Calgary restaurant makes list of 50 best spots to dine in North America

A Calgary restaurant hidden away behind a discreet door in the lobby of the Alt Hotel East Village is the only spot in Alberta featured on a new list of the best eateries on the continent.

The list of North America’s 50 Best Restaurants 2026, released on Monday, includes a total of 14 dining locations in Canada.

Among them was Eight, a fine dining restaurant headed by chef Darren MacLean, which came in second place.

The eatery has only eight seats and offers four services per week.

“This tiny restaurant offers a chef’s table experience like no other,” says the 50 Best website.

“Cooking, storytelling and impeccable service come together in one theatrical performance, designed – as the name suggests – for just eight lucky people.

”MacLean says for him and the team behind Eight, the recognition represents years of work dedicated to exploring a single question: What is Canadian food?

“This award belongs to everyone who believed that question was worth asking,” MacLean said. “It belongs to every member of our team, past and present. It belongs to the farmers, fishers, producers, artisans, and craftspeople who help share the story of this country through food. Most importantly, it belongs to our guests who trusted us enough to join the conversation. To our team, our guests, our peers, and this country. Thank you.”

The restaurant was also awarded the Best Restaurant in West Canada 2026 award and the Highest New Entry Award 2026.
