It's competitive inside some Canadian retirement homes this week, as dozens of facilities participate in the Seniors Games.

Dozens of Calgary seniors are among thousands across Canada participating in a friendly competition that promotes physical activity.

The 16th Annual All Seniors Care Seniors Games run from Feb. 3 to 7, and includes competitors from 29 Canadian retirement residences.

The event brings participants together to play an array of sports in their facility, inspiring them to stay active during the cold winter months.

They compete in everything from hallway walks to bocce and shuffleboard.

The local winners of the events are even gifted a medal.

“It’s fabulous,” All Seniors Care manager Barbara Thorne said. “We have games going on all week, entertainment, and we’re going to give the gold, silver and bronze medals on the podium this year.”

“It’s all a little bit exciting.”

On Tuesday, residents took part in the bean bag toss and pétanque.

“I think it’s really terrific,” Calgary competitor George Deegan told CTV News. “The people with the walkers and the wheelchairs, they’re able to participate, and it brings everyone together. It’s a real spirit of camaraderie.”

The fun wraps up Friday with Jeopardy, some bingo and a closing ceremony.
