Calgary's first weekend of 2025 will be a cold one

Published:

Friday's set to be another cold one; maybe colder We can expect Friday's weather to be similar to Thursday's, if not a touch colder. Warmer temperatures are on their way, though.

New year, same cold temperatures!

Calgary managed to reach a high of -15 C on Thursday, which is considerably cooler than the normal high of -3 C for this time of year. But the city is not cold enough to qualify for an Extreme Cold Warning, which is the case for some areas in central and northern Alberta.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issues these warnings when wind chill values are close to -40 C for several hours.

Despite not being under the warning, the wind will definitely make it feel cooler in Calgary on Thursday night.

With a low of -19 C in store, it will feel more like -29 C overnight and won't improve much heading into Friday.

We will remain under this chilly air mass for a few more days with a pattern reversal working its way into Calgary by early next week.

In addition to the cold, more flurries or light snow are also on the radar as wet weather on the US west coast starts to work its way into southern Alberta late Friday and overnight into Saturday.

Calgary should expect to see between two to four centimetres of light snow start to fall by around 8 p.m. Friday.
