Cavalry FC extend CPL finals MVP Tobias Warschewski through 2026 season

Cavalry FC opens the season Saturday in Hamilton against Forge FC, but Thursday it was all about signing one of the team’s big-name players to an extension.

Cavalry FC announced Thursday that they have singed forward Tobias Warschewski to a new two-year guaranteed contract, with an option to extend it through 2027.

The German sniper has scored 16 goals in 33 games since joining Cavalry FC in 2024.

Warschewski won the CPL’s Golden Boot award in 2024, scoring two goals against Valour FC on the final day of the season to take the title.

He opened the scoring in the final game of the season, helping lead Cavalry FC to its first North Star Cup championship, earning himself the Finals MVP.

He continued to score timely goals against big-time competition, scoring the winning goal in Cavalry FC’s Concacaf Champions Cup victory over Pumas UNAM.

“Tobi’s quality is clear to see and a big reason behind our success last year,” said Cavalry FC head coach and general manager Tommy Wheeldon Jr., in a media release.

“He thrives in the big games and always has a big moment in him,” Wheeldon added. “He has taken his role within the club with both hands and is deserving of all of the plaudits that have come his way. Tobi gets the fans out of their seats and helps us put points on the board, so I am delighted that our club was able to give him the extension.”

Warschewski will be designated as a domestic player in 2025, due to a change in the way the Canadian Premier League designates players. Each team is required to start league matches with a minimum of six designated players in the starting lineup.

“Since day one of being at the club, I knew this is the place I wanted to be,” said Warschewski. “I’m very comfortable here and want to celebrate even more success with everyone that has grown close to my heart.”

Cavalry kicks off the 2025 season Saturday against Forge FC in Hamilton.

The club’s home opener is scheduled for April 18 against Vancouver FC. Game time for that one is 5 p.m. MT. It will be the club’s first match at Spruce Meadows since winning the North Star Cup.
