Cavalry FC move into Telus Canadian Championship quarter-finals with 3-1 win over Pacific FC

Cavalry FC advanced to the quarter finals of the Telus Canadian Championship Saturday, defeating Pacific FC 3-1.

Cavalry got goals from Daan Klomp, Tobias Warchewski and Michael Baldisimo to propel them past Pacific FC.

“We were good first half, really good,“ said Cavalry head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. after the game. ”We tried something a little bit tactical, getting the big man (Klomp) to step in and overload the mid-field, and when he steps into midfield, he also sees gaps and spaces ahead and that’s where his goal came from.”

Cavalry FC will take on the Vancouver Whitecaps in a home-and-home quarter-final, on July 8 followed by a game on July 12 or 13.

“It’s always a great time playing the Whitecaps,” Wheeldon said. “They’re a top, top football club – I know in 2019, we kind of set the tone with a doubleheader against them and we’ve had a couple other good ones against them.

“I think we have a pretty good record at BC Place,” he added, “and we’re looking forward to playing them – of course we’re not going to underestimate them.

“It’s a good challenge for us to see how good we are against their quality.”

Earlier last week, the Calgary Blizzard were eliminated from the Canadian Championship, losing 5-0 to FC Montreal.

The Telus Canadian Championship features clubs from across the country competing for the Voyageurs Cup.

The 2026 tournament features 15 teams from Major League Soccer, the Canadian Premier League and Premier Soccer Leagues Canada.

The winners qualify for the annual Concacaf Champions Cup.
