Flag raised for myeloma awareness at Lethbridge city hall

The Lethbridge Myeloma Support Group raised a flag at city hall, hoping to garner further awareness of a common blood cancer.

Members of the community gathered outside city hall in Lethbridge on Monday to raise the myeloma flag.

The Lethbridge Myeloma Support Group raised the flag, hoping to bring awareness of the second most common blood cancer.

The cancer—which can cause bone pain, fatigue and kidney infections—may take three or more visits to a physician before reaching an initial diagnosis.

The group is hoping the flag will help share the message and raise awareness of the disease.

“Awareness is the most important thing,” said Brian Treadwell, Lethbridge support group leader for Myeloma Canada.

“It’s hard to detect. People put off little things that occur in their bodies (but) they should go to their family physician for anything they feel is off.”

The group says thanks to research, people are living longer with a better quality of life.

They hope treatments could possibly lead to a cure for the disease.
