Canadian country star Michelle Wright has made her home in Nashville, Tenn., since the 1990s, but says coming back to Canada is always meaningful.

“When the bus crosses the border into Canada, there’s just something that happens, I don’t know what it is, but it feels good to be home always,” Wright told CTV News.

She’ll be in Calgary this weekend as part of the Heartstrings and Honky Tonks series with fellow Canadian performers at Studio Bell.

“My good friend Patricia Conroy has done a couple, and she said it’s just as magical as you can imagine,” Wright said.

One of the songs Wright plans to perform is “Strong,” which Wright co-wrote with Deric Ruttan in honour of Captain Nichola Goddard, a Calgary woman who became the first Canadian female soldier killed in combat since WWII.

“Deric and I are actually going to be performing it together for our first time, and certainly she will be amongst the energy in the room,” she said.

Wright formed an affinity for Canada’s servicemen and women on a trip to perform for the troops in Afghanistan.

“My life changed after that trip,” she said.

Heartstrings and Honky Tonks takes place at Studio Bell at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.
