LETHBRIDGE, ALTA. — Four candidates have thrown their hats into the ring to represent Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner in Ottawa.
Conservative Glen Motz is seeking his fourth term as MP for the riding. He’s been in office since a 2016 byelection following the sudden death of Jim Hillyer.
The former Medicine Hat police inspector has served on the national defence committee since 2021.
CTV News reached out to Glen Motz for comment but did not receive a response in time for publication.
Those running to unseat Motz include the Liberal Party’s Tom Rooke.
He wants to give the region a strong voice in Ottawa.
“I believe in any election, people deserve a choice. And, to have nobody running or even an administrative candidate running is not acceptable in this area,” said Rooke.
Running for the NDP is Jocelyn Johnson.
This will be her second time running in the riding after finishing second to Motz in 2021.
After falling short last time, she feels ready to put up a fight in the historically conservative riding.
“I have learned that people are really optimistic. They’re really future-oriented, really looking at, ‘What is the future of the community? Who’s going to best champion that?’” said Johnson.
“But even more so this election is people are really done with division. They’re really done with negativity.”
Rounding out the field is the Green Party’s Andy Shadrack.
His biggest concern is climate change. Shadrack believes addressing climate change should also be a priority for farmers in the region.
“Do you think an agricultural economy on the prairies can survive a two- to three-degree warming phase? How are cattle going to handle that? What happens to cereal farmers if we change the rate of precipitation?” said Shadrack.

Election day is Monday, April 28.
