An investigation is underway into a multi-vehicle collision Wednesday morning on Crowchild Trail S.W. that resulted in the death of one person.
Police responded at 8:18 a.m. to reports of a collision in the northbound lanes of Crowchild between 50 Avenue and Flanders Avenue S.W.

A white 2009 Lincoln MKX driven by a 16-year-old boy was travelling onto the far-right northbound lane of Crowchild Trail from the 50 Ave. S.W. interchange.
At the same time, a white 2011 Lincoln MKX driven by a 47-year-old man with a young child passenger was going north on Crowchild in the adjacent lane.
The 2011 Lincoln changed lanes, hitting the 2009 Lincoln, causing the 2009 Lincoln to go onto the east shoulder of Crowchild Trail. It hit a large concrete base of a support pole for a large traffic sign.
The 2009 Lincoln was extensively damaged and caught fire. The 16-year-old driver was pronounced dead on scene.
The driver of the 2011 Lincoln initially left the scene, but then came back. The driver and passenger weren’t injured.
Speed is being considered as a possible factor in the collision but alcohol and drug impairment are not.
