‘It’s an honour, sincerely’: Cameron Whitcomb connecting with fans through song and sobriety

Success has happened very quickly for Nanaimo, B.C., singer/songwriter Cameron Whitcomb, who is performing at the Calgary Stampede this week.

Success has happened very quickly for Nanaimo, B.C., singer/songwriter Cameron Whitcomb.

Only three years ago, he was doing manual labour building the Trans Mountain Pipeline.

This week, he’s performing at the Calgary Stampede, and his singles Medusa and Quitter have 104 million and 75 million streams on Spotify, respectively.

Whitcomb is celebrating another major milestone—sobriety.

“I’m two years clean—two years and one month clean and sober,” Whitcomb told CTV News.

Quitter has become an inspiration for many of Whitcomb’s fans, who share their stories about overcoming addiction with him at gigs.

“I’m so grateful that people can find solace in my music. It’s an honour, sincerely,” Whitcomb said.

He got serious about songwriting after his stint on season 20 of American Idol, where he made the top 20 but failed to advance.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity. Basically, what it did for me was show me there’s more to my life than digging holes.”
