Kerins hoping to make the most of this opportunity with the Flames

With the season slipping away, Calgary called up Rory Kerins Thursday.

Scoring has been the biggest problem for the Calgary Flames this season. Though 18 games they’ve scored just 38 goals and are dead last in the NHL in that category.

That’s one of the reasons they summoned Rory Kerins from the Calgary Wranglers. They’re hoping he can provide some of that much needed offence and he’s looking forward to that opportunity .

“Ever since last year when I got sent down, this is what you’re working for and why you play every day,” he said.

“It’s what I wanted and I’m happy it’s here and ready to go.”

Will play in the top six

Kerins was the leading scorer on the Wranglers, with five goals and nine assists in 13 games this season.

He’s not coming to the Flames as a saviour but will be given a big opportunity to start off with.

Kerins will play on one of the top lines with Nazem Kadri and Joel Farabee.

Last season, Kerins got in five games with the Flames. He feels he’s much better prepared this time around.

“I think there’s a lot of nerves for the first one,” said Kerins.

“Especially for me, it was my first time meeting all of the guys and being on the ice with them.

“This time around, I’m comfortable in my skin and I feel good.”

Kadri is looking forward to seeing what Kerins can do and what he’s worked on.

He says there will be some adjustments he has to make.

“Just the pace,” said Kadri.

“Obviously he’s a skilled player and I’m happy to play with anybody that can find me and are able to play make, so it should be fun.”

Consistency

Head coach Ryan Huska says he’s been looking for some consistency on that line.

“Farabee and Naz have a connection together and now it’s trying to find someone who can play on the other side and hopefully compliment the way those two are playing right now,” said Huska.

“This gives Rory a great opportunity. He’s played well for the Wranglers and I think he’s ready and deserving of the chance again.”
