‘Morgan Freeman’s Symphonic Blues Experience’ comes to Calgary

Morgan Freeman has had many accolades.

An Academy Award, the Kennedy Center Honors, the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award.

But among those memories, there’s an experience he remembers well—getting thrown off a horse in southern Alberta.

“When we got done and we went to a tavern for evening drinks, everybody knew I got thrown off that horse into the creek,” Freeman told CTV News.

“I was fine. It didn’t hurt me or anything. It was just feelings, you know.”

That’s one of many memories Freeman has of shooting Unforgiven.

The Oscar-winning film directed by Clint Eastwood was shot near Calgary.

“I loved it, and we’ve done three movies together. He’s my favourite director,” said Freeman, whose Oscar for best supporting actor came after another Eastwood film—Million Dollar Baby.

On Nov. 6, Morgan Freeman’s Symphonic Blues Experience comes to the Jack Singer Concert Hall.

It’s a project that arose from Freeman’s involvement in the Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, Miss.—a city viewed by many as the birthplace of Delta blues.

“We have become sort of a mecca for that kind of music,” said Freeman.

Tourists can stay overnight in rooms above the club.

Freeman admits he’s partial to another southern classic on the Ground Zero menu—fried green tomatoes.
